G4# Lowest to Highest Route
Start at Badwater("lowest") going westward in sequence to Whitney Summit "highest" ( cannot do random sections back & forth)
The "original" intent was to go on the road from Badwater to the Whitney summit ( because originally nobody thought of going cross country because it was super hard to carry enough water thus super unsafe)
The distance of 146 miles is approximate, just because the original crossing was done on the regular hiking route
But we have recognized the mountaineer route, and bypassing the Lone Pine to Whitney Portal road by going on the trail, both making it a little shorter ... but not necessarily easier
I also remember cases where people went up to Whitney and they continued to do the John Muir Trail ( and No we did not keep track of that :-)
One year i personally had to use te ice axe and crampons on the regular route going straight up ... that was probably 1mi shorter and 5-8 hours SLOWER :-)
If you read all the Guidelines ... be role model , be "legal" like use open actual trails ... and so on ...
